Our village
choir was formed in June 2001 to sing at various events – harvest
suppers; summer concerts and revues; church occasions etc. There are
usually 18 of us and we meet on Monday evenings at 7.30pm in the
village hall. New members are always welcome – most of us learn and
sing ‘by ear’ rather than by sight reading so enthusiasm is your best
quality and no auditions are required!
We like to sing a great variety of music from show standards to folk,
Gregorian chants to pop, unison to four-part harmonies. We have grown
in confidence and like to polish material ready for performance but we
have limitations, one of which is that we have no pianist to accompany
us - only David Sutcliffe on guitar. So if anybody out there wants to
step in to help us, they’d be so welcome!
Without doubt our highlight this last year has been recording our first
CD. Knowing that our church needed funds to restore its tower, we
rehearsed and recorded a set of ‘different’ Christmas carols and
spirituals to sell at £5 and have so far raised £1,000 for
the church. It’s been great fun and we’re proud of its success.
In May 2005 we took part in the Festival of the Voice organised by the
National Trust whereby 10 or 11 amateur choirs turn up and sing their
stuff at times and venues all around Stourhead gardens. The theme last
year was the 60th anniversary of VE Day so we sang a medley of WW2
songs which was well received. We even dressed up in period costume
which added to the occasion. On May 6th this year we will be taking
part again and the theme this time is ‘Songs from the Shows’.
We also enjoy the occasional outing together to see a show and in
April we’re off to see ‘Guys and Dolls’ at Taunton Brewhouse Theatre.
One of our members Tom Sutcliffe is in this show so we wish him luck.
Once again if anyone reading this link would like to find out more
